Teen lessons for ages 13 to 17 are offered at the beginner and advanced levels. The instructor to student ratio is 1:8. Classes for all levels take place on the same date and time period and are combined with the Adult lessons.

This level is for those teens who have not had swimming lessons before or who are not comfortable in the water. Participants will learn basic swimming and water safety skills.
This level is for teens that wish to improve their basic strokes while learning some more advanced skills including freestyle, backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke. Participants will then attempt to perfect their strokes through repetition and instruction.
This program is designed to build endurance, work on stroke technique and prepare for competitive racing. Knowledge of strokes and ability to swim the length of the pool is necessary. The class meets twice a week for one hour each time.

Guppy and Bronze level swimmers of the New York Sharks Swim Team will be training at the YMCA pool this year. The program will be administered through the NY Sharks Swim Club. If you are interested in joining, click here to link to the Sharks website for details regarding tryouts, fees, schedules and requirements to qualify for the Bronze level. Swimmers in the program must be members of the YMCA and will participate in YMCA competitive meets. Swimmers not ready to participate in the Bronze group will be able to participate in Guppies if they are able to swim at least one lap of freestyle. Guppies will train every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:15 to 7:15 pm. Bronze swimmers will train three days per week: Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 pm and Fridays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. All fees and registrations are handled by the New York Sharks.
This program is designed for youth who wish to volunteer in the YMCA Aquatics program but are too young to qualify as certified lifeguards. Under a structured program you will assist lifeguards and aquatics supervisors while developing aquatic and leadership skills that will be helpful in successfully completing the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course at age 15. You will learn about preventing aquatic injuries, proper response to water emergencies, swim teaching techniques, pool maintenance and aquatic professionalism. All this while you gain hours of community service. Hours will be worked around your current schedule.
Prerequisite: Swim front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side. Tread water for one minute using arms and legs. Submerge and swim a distance of ten feet underwater. Skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the program.

This course trains you for work as a lifeguard. Upon successful completion of the course you are certified by the American Red Cross (ARC) as trained in lifeguarding skills. On the first day of the course, you must pass the water skills test shown below in order to continue in the course. You will be certified in Lifeguarding/First Aid (3 years) and CPR/AED Professional Rescuer (1 year) if you attend all course sessions, participate fully, and pass all physical tests and evaluations with a grade of at least 80%.
The course length is 31 hours over three Sundays
You must attend all sessions and be 15 years old by December 7, 2008. Space is limited and registration will be on a first come first served basis so register early. Prerequisite water testing takes place on the first day of classes.
The course fee will be refunded if the participant fails to pass the prerequisite test. Registrants are subject to a 25% processing fee if a request for refund is submitted prior to the start of the course. There are no refunds for failure to attend or to meet the requirements of the course once passing the prerequisites test.
There are NO make up classes. Students must attend all classes. No exceptions.
This course teaches you how to instruct others in water safety and learning to swim. Upon successful completion of the course you are certified by the American Red Cross (ARC) as trained to teach the following ARC courses: all six levels of the Learn to Swim program, Basic Water Rescue, Longfellow's Whales Tales and Safety Training for Coaches. On the first day of the course, you will be taught the Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) course and must pass the basic water skills test shown below as well as pass the written test associated with the FIT course. You will be certified as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) for 2 years if you attend all course sessions, participate fully, and pass all physical tests and evaluations with a grade of at least 80%.
