Youth Swim Lessons (Age 6 to 12)

This progression of lessons for children age 6 to 12 years old is comprised of five main components: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games and rescue.  Each skill level builds upon the preceding level.  Instructor to student ratio is 1:6 or 1:8 (advanced).  Classes may be cancelled if less than four children register.

Young Girl Swimmer

Polliwog

This beginning level course acquaints children with the pool, the use of flotation devices and floating.  By the end of this level they should know the front, side and back  paddle strokes.  Children can swim across the width of the pool by the end of the class.  Each class is 45 minutes.

Summer Program fee: Family membership $85; Other members $120; Non-members $165

  • Regular Summer Session:  1 day/wk for 7 weeks starting week of Monday, July 5 to week of Monday, August 16.
    Intensive Summer Sessions: 5 days/wk for 2 weeks
    Session 1:  June 28-July 9
    Session 2:  July 12-July 23
    Session 3:  July 26-August 6
    Session 4:  August 9-August 20
    • Monday through Friday 4:00 to 4:45 PM (5 days/wk for 2 weeks)
    • Saturdays 12:30 to 1:15 PM (1 day/wk for 7 weeks)
    • Sundays 11:30 to 12:15 PM (1 day/wk for 7 weeks)

Guppy

Children continue to practice and build upon basic skills.  Now performing more skills with less aid of a flotation device.  They are introduced to lead-up strokes to the front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke.  Children can swim a length of the pool without assistance by the end of this level.  Each class is 45 minutes.  Program fee and available classes are the same as for Polliwog.

Minnow

This is the intermediate level.  Children further refine lead up strokes as their skills become more like those normally used in swimming.   Each class is 45 minutes.  Program fee and available classes are the same as for Polliwog.

Dolphin

This class is designed for students who are excelling in Minnow but do not have the endurance to swim the length of the pool on a continuous basis.  Each class is 45 minutes.

Fish

Children work to perform the front and back crawl with flip turns, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke.  They are introduced to the butterfly stroke.  Each class is 45 minutes.

At this advanced level students work on refining their strokes and increasing endurance.  Each class is 45 minutes.

Shark Swimmer

The children at this level continue to perfect their strokes using proper starts and turns.  Each class is 45 minutes.
