Fitness Classes and Organized Sports for Adults and Seniors (Age 16 and up)

Group Fitness Classes (Free to Members)

The Rockland County YMCA offers group fitness classes that range from tranquil yoga to energizing Boot Camp. They’re a great way to learn new skills, build strength, add variety to your workout, and make new friends. These classes are free to members and cost $10 per class for non-members.  You can purchase a Group Fitness Class Card for $80 for 10 classes.  The card expires two months after the initial use.  All of these classes can be joined at any time. If there are two or fewer participants, it is left to the instructor's discretion to teach the class or not.  Click here for a printable PDF file of the Group Fitness Schedule.

Yoga

Yoga Class

The classes differ slightly depending on the instructor; however, they all consist of stretching postures, breathing techniques and meditation.  These classes are designed to develop strength and flexibility.  The YMCA provides workout mats but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish.

Abs and Upper or Lower BODYBLAST

We challenge you to experience this powerful, integrated strength and sculpt workout.  Every other week either the upper or lower body will be the primary target.  Each class combines form, fun and a variety of fitness equipment and routines designed to target your Chest, Back, Shoulders, Tri's, Bi's, and Abs. Experience the Intensity-- Savor the results!

Boot Camp

Don't let the name scare you!  This class is for anyone looking to improve their fitness level.  Dumbbells, bands, steps, stability balls, Bosu and medicine balls are all used to get a total body workout.  This class will take your body places it has never been before.

Cardio-Sculpt Fusion

Experience the perfect balance between aerobic conditioning and body shaping. First we burn away those calories to a heart-pumping fitness beat. Guaranteed fun, while you improve endurance and strengthen your heart with these twenty-five minutes of non-intimidating aerobic/dance movements. Next, feel the burn as we sculpt, strengthen and lengthen, concentrating on all the major muscle groups using free weights and fitness tools. Train at your own pace, have fun, get strong, and enjoy the music!

Awesome Abs

Strengthen your abdominals using a variety of moves and techniques.

Pilates

Focus on conditioning the body from the inside out.  Learn the importance of core stabilization, muscle balance, proper alignment, strength and flexibility while integrating the concept of mindfulness, fluidity and grace.

Karate Conditioning

Learn karate etiquette, techniques, basic punches, blocks, and kicks in an environment that is as much fun as it is educational. This lunch-time class will work every muscle, tendon, joint, organ, and gland as you enhance your flexibility, strength, and balance and achieve relaxation, restoration, and renewal.

Family Karate Sundays (6 Years to Adult)

There is no reason why family members of different generations cannot take part in karate training - anyone can learn karate!  The physical and mental benefits associated with karate training, which include increased fitness, focus and self confidence, extend across one's lifespan.  This unique way of training with family members is more than a opportunity to be together in time and space, but it's also a chance to explore and enjoy a shared interest.  Can you think of a better way to bond with your family?

  • Sunday 2:00 to 3:00 PM Free registration for Y members; $10 registration fee for non-members.  Class are $10 per person or a flat fee of $15 for a family of two or more.

Mat Science

This class features a progressive series of exercises that accommodate all fitness levels to increase strength, flexibility and balance of the entire body. The exercises are derived from classic disciplines such as yoga, dance and Pilates. The focus of the class is on mindful movement, core stabilization technique and unified body movements.

Zumba

Zumba is a fusion of Latin and international music with dance themes creating a dynamic, exciting, and effective fitness system. The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. You don't have to know how to dance to do Zumba. Zumba creates a party-like atmosphere. It's fun, it's different, it's easy and it's effective. Try it and see.

Adult Golf Lessons (15+ years)

Adult golf class – always wanted to learn the great game of golf? Or perhaps sharpen your game and swing during the colder months ready for next season? English Golf Teaching Professional and TGA of Rockland County Director, Mark Thornewell will lead an 8 week session in a fun, relaxed environment. Students will cover chipping, putting, iron play and driving as well learning more about the rules and etiquette getting you course ready. You’ll be amazed at how much you can progress in 8 weeks. Maximum class size is 8.

  • Tuesdays 7:00 to 8:00 pm
  • Member Fee:  $180 per set of eight classes;  Non-members $200 per set of eight classes
  • Session 2:  January 5 to March 2

Adult Pick-up Basketball (Age 16+) (Members Only)

Show off your skills and get fit. Come pick up a friendly game of basketball—a long time tradition here at the YMCA. In fact, the Y invented the game (back in 1891 in Massachusetts)! Teams of five players will be formed on a first-come, first-served basis. The first team to reach 11 points wins and challenges the next team.

  • Monday and Wednesday 8:30 to 10:00 PM
  • Free for members

Masters Pick-up Basketball (Age 40+) (Members Only)

Perfect for the more mature men who prefer to play against their peers! Teams of five players will be formed on a first-come, first-served basis. The first team to reach 11 points wins and challenges the next team.

  • Monday and Wednesday 7:00 to 8:30 PM
  • Free for members

Competitive Adult Volleyball (Age 18+ years)

Adult volleyball playersVolleyball got its start at  a YMCA in 1896 so it's no wonder that the Rockland County YMCA continues the tradition.  We offer three hours of co-ed pick-up play for experienced volleyball players who are looking for an informal, fun night of competitive volleyball.  Players should have fairly good passing and ball control skills, be committed to competitive team play (pass, set and spike) and understand that there will be some powerful hitters in most sessions.  You do not need to come with a team, as we will create skill-balanced teams in each session.  Limit of 20 players per session, members and participants who pay in advance will receive priority.

  • Thursdays 7:00 to 10:00 PM
  • Fee:  Free for members;  Non-members $100 for 20 weeks or $10 per week

Open Court Volleyball for Beginners (Age 16+ years)

This will give people who are new to the game or those who are curious to try it an opportunity to use the net and test their skills. (MEMBERS ONLY)

Silver Sneakers Fitness Program for Seniors

The Silver Sneakers Fitness Program is the nation's leading exercise program designed exclusively for older adults.  To join the program you must be a Medicare-eligible member of a sponsoring private health insurance plan (Click here to find out if your health insurance plan is a sponsor >).  Participants receive a basic fitness center membership at no cost.  The program includes use of basic amenities and access to the signature Silver Sneakers class.  The Silver Sneakers class itself is open to all YMCA members whether they are Silver Sneaker members or not.  This class utilizes a combination of chair movements and strength training with very low intensity.

  • Monday 10:00 to 10:45 AM (RANGE OF MOTION) with Marilyn
  • Thursday 10:15 to 11:00 AM (RANGE OF MOTION) with Terry

    These classes utilize a combination of chair movements and strength training with very low intensity. Perfect for older adults looking to build their strength and maintain joint mobility.

  • Wednesday 10:15 to 11:00 AM with Terry (YOGA STRETCH)

    Move your body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance, and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.
