YMCA Code of Conduct and Personal Assumption of Risk

Code of Conduct

The YMCA is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all.  The Rockland County YMCA values are Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.  Therefore all members are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct rules.

Each member is accountable for his or her behavior and attitude while in the facility or associated with YMCA programs.  We ask that all individuals act and dress appropriately at all times while using our facilities and/or participating in YMCA programs/activities.  Dress codes are posted in specific program areas.  All YMCA patrons are expected to obey instructions and requests by lifeguards and other staff.

Our Code of Conduct forbids the following:

  • Angry, vulgar or offensive language including swearing, name-calling, shouting and refusal to follow instructions given by YMCA staff.
  • Use of cell phones in locker rooms, swimming pool, and other designated program areas.
  • Physical contact with any person in an angry or threatening manner.
  • Sexual explicit conversation or behavior, or sexual contact with another person.
  • Harassment or intimidation by words, gestures, body language or other behavior towards YMCA staff or others.
  • Behavior that intends to or results in the theft or destruction of property (YMCA or others).
  • Carrying or concealing any weapons or devices that may be used as weapons.
  • Use of drugs or alcohol in the building or on the grounds, or use of the building or programs by anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Smoking or use of tobacco products on YMCA property - all of our buildings and grounds are smoke-free.
  • Loitering within the facilities or on the grounds of the YMCA after being requested to depart from the YMCA property.

Anyone who feels this code of conduct is being violated should notify a staff person immediately so that the YMCA may respond. YMCA staff members are eager to be of assistance.  Suspension or termination of membership may result from a violation of this code of conduct.

Personal Assumption of Risk

The nature of activities participated in at the Rockland County YMCA involves inherent risks such as bruises, scrapes, muscle pulls, along with more serious risks, such as heart attacks.  Each participant assumes personal responsibility in the event of injury sustained in the normal course of events.

Children under twelve years of age are not to be left unattended.

Since most members/participants already carry their own health and accident insurance, the cost of group insurance is  not included in our membership and program fees.

The YMCA strongly recommends that program participants have a health and physical exam by their physician before beginning physical activities.

Please do not bring valuables items to the YMCA.  The YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items.  Members are advised to bring a lock and to use a locker for their clothing and personal belongings.
