Mission of the YMCA

The Rockland County YMCA is a volunteer-driven association that welcomes all people to programs that enhance their health and well-being, strengthens their personal and family relations and enriches their lives.

The Central Role of Volunteers in Fulfilling the YMCA Mission

Volunteers Filling Flower Boxes

Volunteers play a central role in fulfilling the mission of the YMCA.  From the volunteer Board of Directors and Trustees, who set the overall policies and procedures, to individuals who volunteer a few hours of their time in specific programs, projects or events, their influence is strongly felt throughout the organization.  Volunteers and their commitment to community service are what makes the Y so much more than an ordinary health club.  By design, volunteers are intimately involved in all aspects of the YMCA.  The greater the participation of volunteers, the healthier the Y and the greater the impact on the surrounding community.  The return to volunteers is personal satisfaction and the knowledge that their efforts build a stronger sense of community and further the growth and charitable goals of the Y.

How Can You Help?

A goal of the Y movement is that every member volunteer in some form.  The volunteer effort can take many forms such as: serving on the Board of Directors, teaching or assisting in programs, providing free services or materials, supporting a needy child's summer camp experience, fund raising, or simply donating to the various fund drives throughout the year.  We need your help.  If you are interested, please call Stephanie Salter, Member Services Director at (845) 358-0245 Ext. 304.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Board of Directors - All members of the Board of Directors are volunteers.  They set policy in the Y and oversee operations and participate in fund raising efforts.  If you are interested in joining the Board please talk to any member of the Board or to Chuck Maze, CEO.
  • Teaching or assisting in programs - The Y has many opportunities for those interested in teaching or assisting in programs.  Examples would be helpers on Scavenger Hunt night, monitors for teen dances and tutoring in the child care program.  Those with fitness training certificates or lifeguard training certificates are especially needed.
  • Providing free services or materials - The YMCA can use any volunteers who are plumbers, electricians, carpenters, computer experts or other skilled trades or professions willing to donate their services for small projects. Likewise, materials, supplies or tools donated to the YMCA help us put more money towards programs rather than maintenance.
  • Fund raising efforts - Your help is needed to plan and execute our fundraising drives.  Everyone can be matched to a job that suits their talents and available time.
  • High School and College Community Service - High school students who wish to volunteer for community service are welcome as are college students looking for internships or shorter term volunteering opportunities
  • Donations to scholarship and capital campaigns
  • Other activities suggested by the volunteer that meet the Y's needs
