Registration is Now Open for the Fall Session

Now is the time to sign for the Fall session at the YMCA.  There are many new programs that can help meet your fitness goals.   In addition, we hope that you will join us during America on the Move Week from September 20 to 27 for one of our many healthy-lifestyle activities.  Likewise, this fall we are expanding our Teen Program with the launch of our Teen Leaders Club and Teen Recreation Nights to provide more activities.

Street Closing in Front of Nyack Facility (July 2nd and 3rd, 2008)

South Broadway will be closed from Depew Avenue to Burd Street on July 2nd and 3rd, 2008, so the Village can install a new water line.  As a result, there will be limited access to the YMCA by car. We recommend that you use the Riverspace parking lot (free before 11 am, but parking will be limited on Thursday due to the Farmer’s Market) and the free parking at Memorial Park (take Piermont Avenue and turn down Depew Avenue).  We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Youth and Teen Night (Saturday, June 21, 2008)

There will be a Youth and Teen Night on Saturday, June 21 from 6:30 pm to 10:00 pm at the Nyack facility featuring swimming, arts and crafts, basketball, poetry, food and prizes.  This event is for middle school students only.  Be sure to bring your school ID or you will not be admitted.  A donation of $2 will be collected at the front desk.  If you intend to go swimming don't forget to bring a swimming cap and towel.  Caps can be purchased at the front desk.

Aquatics Director Opening Available

Aquatics Director needed to develop and manage the aquatics program at the Rockland County YMCA pool in Nyack.  Must possess aquatics certifications and be familiar with pool scheduling and operation.  Experience required working with youth and families, teaching and supervision.  Please fax your resume to Lucy at 845-727-2084.

Swimming Instructors and Lifeguards Jobs are Available

Looking for Red Cross or YMCA certified lifeguards with up to date CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer training certificates to work at the Nyack branch of the Rockland County YMCA as swimming instructors and/or lifeguards.  Extra pay for Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. Many positions are available.  Flexible work hours ranging from 5:30 am to 10 pm seven days a week.  Please call Josh Friedrich, Assistant Aquatics Director at 845-358-0245 to apply.

Change in Swimming Class Schedule Due to Memorial Day Observance

There will be no aquatics classes Sunday, May 25 and Monday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day.  Classes will be made up on Monday, June 23 and Sunday, June 29.

Change in Pool Schedule for Wednesday, May 21

Children from the Y's Rainbow Connection day care program will be using the pool on Wednesday, May 21 from 10:30 to 11:00 am.  The regularly schedule activity for the time is cancelled.

New Synchronized Swimming Class Announced for Ages 8 to Adult

A new synchronized swimming class is being offered for a seven week session on Tuesdays from 4:15 to 6:15 pm.  The session runs from May 13 through June 24.  Please call the Aquatics Director at 845-358-0245 for details.

Get a Gift if You Recruit a New Member for The YMCA

The Y is running a "Member Get A Member" promotion for the month of May.  Here is how it works.  Bring in a family member or friend to join the Y for an adult or senior individual or family membership and you will get a free duffle bag if they are still an active member three months after they join.  As an added bonus, the joiners fee for the new member will be cut in half.  This offers only applies to new memberships.

Please join us for a free 30 minute swim lesson for your child at the the Nyack pool.  Children will be grouped according to their age and ability.  The classes will take place on April 28.  To register for this trial please contact the YMCA Aquatics Department at (845) 358-0245 before April 25, 2008.  There are only ten spaces available for each class, so please register early.  Groups will be broken into Preschool and Youth lessons.  This offer is available only to children who have not participated in the previous two sessions of our swim program.

Annmarie Uhl and John Eccleston Are Elected to the YMCA Board of Directors

The YMCA is pleased to announce the election of Annmarie Uhl and John Eccleston to the Rockland County YMCA Board of Directors.  Annmarie Uhl resides in Sparkill and is an active member of her community where she serves as President of the Board of Education of the South Orangetown Schools, and is an adjunct professor with CCNY and Adelphi University through the Rockland Teachers Center  John Eccleston resides in Stony Point and is Principal and President of Open Gate Marketing Communications in Nyack. He has more than 20 years experience in Marketing and Public Relations and serves on the Marketing Committee of the Rockland Economic Development Corporation.

Healthy Kids Day (Free to all comers, Saturday, April 12, 2008)

Join us at the Nyack branch on Saturday from Noon to 5 pm and at Y's Beginnings at 18 Parkside Drive in Suffern from 10am to Noon to celebrate Healthy Kids Day by participating in activities aimed at encouraging healthy lifestyle habits in children.  It's great fun for the whole family.  Activities include family swim, karate, a dance demonstration, arts and crafts, and athletic games.  Healthy snacks will be served and tips, and information to improve health will available at manned booths.

TOGA Biathlon (Sunday May 11, 2008)

The TOGA Biathlon is being held Sunday, May 11, 2008 at Rockland Lake State Park in Congers, New York.  This a USA Triathlon sponsored event that benefits the Rockland County YMCA aquatics program.  You can register at any TOGA/Gotham store or at www.active.com.

Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee Pays a Visit to the YMCA After School Program

Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee visited the after school program at William O. Schaefer school to help celebrate their recent accreditation by the National After School Foundation.  This and two other YMCA after school programs are the only ones in Rockland County to achieve this distinction.  Assemblywoman Jaffee also saw first hand how her member item grant through the NYS Office of Children and Families was being put to good use.  Her commitment has helped the YMCA improve its community service and we thank her for it.

State Senator Thomas Morahan Helps in Restoring the YMCA Building in Nyack

Senator Morahan stopped by with Marion McQueen, VP Special Programs New York State Empire Development Corporation to witness the completion of the window restoration project at the YMCA main building in Nyack.  The project was made possible by a $50,000 Capital Assistance Grant from the New York State Empire Development Corporation through a Member Item By Senator Morahan.  Senator Morahan said  "The YMCA is a vital asset with many community programs.   It is essential to preserve this historic building for the residents of Rockland County.  This building restoration project will help ensure that youth and families will continue to enjoy YMCA programs for years to come".  Thank you Senator Morahan for recognizing the value of the YMCA and supporting its programs.
