Group Swim Lessons at North Rockland High School

The Y is “America’s Swim Instructor” and the most accessible community resource to prevent drowning and encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming. The Y introduced the country to the concept of group swim lessons more than 100 years ago, (1909), and each year, the Y teaches more than a million children invaluable water safety and swimming skills.

For more than 160 years, the YMCA has nurtured potential and united communities across America to create lasting, and meaningful change. Everything the Y does is in service of building a better us. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to teach youth, teens, and adults to swim, so they can stay safe around water and learn the skills they need to make swimming a lifelong pursuit for staying healthy.

Swim Basics: Stages 1, 2, & 3
Swimmers will progress through classes that help teach safety around the water, increase comfort with underwater exploration, introduce self-rescue skills, encourage forward movement and momentum. Classes will also introduce rhythmic breathing with integrated movements. Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills: Swim, float, swim- sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit Jump, push, turn, grab.

Stage 1 (School Age): Increases comfort with underwater exploration & introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance
Stage 2 (School Age):
Encourages forward movement in water & introduces basic self-rescue skills
Stage 3 (School Age):
Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages

Swim Strokes: Stages 4, 5, & 6
Swimmers that have advanced beyond Swim Basics will progress through learning techniques for front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke kick, butterfly kick, and elementary backstroke. Safety skills are reinforced through continued work on treading water and sidestroke. More advanced swimmers will refine technique for all major competitive strokes.

Stage 4 (School Age): Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl/back crawl & reinforces water safety through treading water & elementary backstroke
Stage 5 (School Age): Introduces breaststroke & butterfly & reinforces safety through treading water & sidestroke
Stage 6 (School Age): Refines competitive stroke technique & encourages swimming as a part of a healthy lifestyle
